Abode of Clouds Meghalaya

Meghalaya is a state in northeast India. Its capital is Shillong. The word Meghalaya means “the abode of clouds”, Meghalaya was formed on 21 January 1972, the United Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills and the Garo Hills. The state is the wettest region of India, During th British rule of India they nicknamed it the “Scotland of the East”. English is the official langauage of Meghalaya unlike many Indian states.

Shillong

Shillong is a hill station in northeast India and capital of the state of Meghalaya. It’s known for the indigenous Cultures features displays on the region’s native people. Waterfalls include the Elephant Falls to the southwest. East of here, forested Shillong Peak offers city views

Laitlum Grand Canyon

Laitlum Grand Canyon, meaning “End of Hills” in the Khasi language, is a breathtaking viewpoint located about 25 km from Shillong in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills. Perched atop misty cliffs, it offers panoramic vistas of rolling green hills, deep gorges, and dramatic valleys, making it a haven for nature lovers, trekkers, and photographers. 

Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji is also known as Sohra, is a high-altitude town in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya. It’s known for its living root bridges, made from rubber trees. In the surrounding hills, the Noh-Kalikai, Seven siter Falls, Dain Thlen and Kynrem waterfalls. Wei Sawdong Falls is a three tiered waterfall located in Cherrapunjee, South of town, Mawsmai Cave is illuminated to show its stalagmites.

Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani, is a scenic reservoir in Meghalaya, located 15 km north of Shillong. It was created by damming the Umiam River in the early 1960s as part of a hydroelectric project. The lake is a popular tourist destination offering scenic views, water sports, and boating activities and many other tourist attractions

Nohkalikai falls

Nohkalikai Falls, located near Cherrapunji (Sohra) in Meghalaya, is India’s tallest plunge waterfall, dropping an impressive 1,115 feet (340 meters) into a turquoise pool below. Beyond its natural grandeur, the falls are steeped in a poignant local legend of a woman named Likai, who, upon discovering a tragic family betrayal, leapt to her death from the cliff, giving the waterfall its name—’Noh Ka Likai’, meaning ‘the leap of Likai’ .

Dawki River

Dawki River is known as the Umngot River, is a popular tourist destination in Meghalaya, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings. The river is a major attraction for boating, with boats seemingly floating on a transparent surface due to the water’s exceptional clarity, Dawki is the border town situated between India and Bangladesh. Krang Suri Waterfalls also known for blue water and its majestic views.

Garden of Caves

Garden of Caves, located near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, is a serene natural attraction featuring waterfalls, rock formations, and lush greenery. It offers a peaceful escape into nature with picturesque caves and scenic walking trails.

Seven Sisters

The “Seven Sisters” refer to the seven northeastern states of India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. This term highlights their geographical proximity and shared cultural heritage, emphasizing their interdependence and unity within the diverse tapestry of India.

Mawsmai Cave

Mawsmai Cave, located near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, is a 150-meter-long limestone cave renowned for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Easily accessible and well-lit, it offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s geological wonders and is a popular attraction for tourists exploring the East Khasi Hills.

Living Root Bridge

The Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat, Meghalaya, is a unique natural wonder made by guiding rubber tree roots to form two stacked living bridges. It’s a stunning example of indigenous bioengineering and a popular trekking destination.

Kynrem Falls

Kynrem Falls is a majestic three-tiered waterfall located within Thangkharang Park, approximately 12 kilometers from Cherrapunji (Sohra) in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. Plunging from a height of 305 meters (1,001 feet), it ranks as the seventh-highest waterfall in India.
